Challenge

When I joined the Pew team, I was supplied with a homepage comp similar to the one seen at left. The most far-reaching challenge was the lack of imagery: not only could Pew not afford a large stock library, but much of their content simply cannot be summarized in a single image without falling into clichés. The next big challenge was just how much content there really was: hundreds of reports, presentations, and white papers, on top of infographics, quizzes, and other resources.

Highlights

  • Inclusion of email tool and use of print styles and system text allows users to share, print and copy-and-paste as necessary;
  • Rigid content and type styles allow users to concentrate on reading rather than deciphering;
  • Large amounts of padding between content pieces gives a feeling of airiness while still allowing for content-heavy pages;
  • Strict grid system allows users to easily anticipate where content will appear from page to page.
